Snakes as Pets

What to feed your Snake - Food Snakes Love!

The diet of snakes is quite extensive. There are a number of foods that the average snake will eat. Of course, certain species of snakes have food that they prefer. There are also certain foods that the majority of species enjoy. Another factor that influences what a snake will eat is the current season. Also, a snake will usually eat whatever is available and in abundance in the area where it lives. The diet of a snake will vary depending on its growth. There are some snakes that tend to survive on a only one type of prey, such as mice.

Some snakes eat fish and aquatic plants. One example of this type of snake is the Tentacles snake. Most snakes will not try to catch just any prey that happens to come into its area. Usually, they will evaluate the prey and determine if it in fact, is prey that it can kill. If the potential prey is too small, it may not even bother with it. However, if the prey is possibly too large for the snake to swallow, it may let is pass by. The most common food for snakes is rodents. The actual way that the snake kills the rodent, which is a mammal, is though its venom and then though constriction.
Another food source for snakes is other snakes. One reason is because it is easy for snakes to swallow other snakes. One example, is that a King snake will actually eat rattlesnakes. They do this by constricting them before they eat them. It is actually amazing that some snakes that are otherwise harmless, will eat other snakes that are dangerous and poisonous.

Other snakes primarily eat snails. They usually eat the snails without swallowing the shell. Some snakes that eat snails include the Thirst snake and Brown snake. There are various other things that snakes eat, some of which may be considered strange. Some of these food sources include toads, spiders, ants, grasshoppers and crayfish. Other species of snakes will eat fish eggs, frogs and various reptiles.
